Pomapoo vs Maltipoo: An Honest Side-by-Side

We raise both. People ask us to pick a favorite and we genuinely will not, because the right answer depends entirely on the household.

What we can do is tell you where they actually differ — not the marketing version where every breed is "great with kids and perfect for apartments."

The Short Version

Temperament: the Difference That Matters

This is the one that decides it for most families.

Pomapoos carry the Pomeranian's confidence. They are curious, a little sassy, and they notice things — the delivery driver, the neighbor's door, the squirrel that had the nerve to exist. They form deep bonds and they have opinions. If you enjoy a dog with a personality big enough to fill a room, this is your dog.

That same alertness means more barking. It is trainable, and it responds well to early work on a "quiet" cue, but you are managing a natural instinct rather than a bad habit. In an apartment with shared walls, that is worth thinking about honestly.

Maltipoos carry the Maltese's softness. They are affectionate, adaptable, and unusually tuned to their person's mood. They tend to settle faster, bark less, and roll with change more easily. They are the more forgiving choice for a first-time owner.

The flip side is attachment. Maltipoos are famously velcro dogs, and they can struggle with being left alone. If your household is empty ten hours a day, that is a real consideration.

Size and Sturdiness

Both finish small — practically speaking, they overlap almost completely.

Pomapoos out of a Mini Poodle tend to be a bit sturdier through the chest. Maltipoos often carry the finer Maltese bone structure. Neither is a dog you leave unsupervised with a toddler who has not learned to be gentle.

Coat, Shedding and Grooming

Effectively a tie, with one technical difference worth knowing.

The Maltese is a hair-coated, non-shedding breed, so a Maltipoo has no shedding parent pulling against it. The Pomeranian is double-coated and does shed, so a Pomapoo has to overcome that — which is exactly why we breed F1b, landing around 75% Poodle.

At F1b, both are non-shedding. Both need brushing three or four times a week and a professional groom every six to eight weeks. Both will mat behind the ears and in the armpits if you skip it. Budget $60 to $90 a visit.

If you are looking at an F1 of either breed, the Maltipoo is the safer bet for coat predictability.

Barking

Pomapoos bark more. That is the plain truth and we would rather say it now than have you discover it in week three.

It is manageable — early socialization, a reliable "quiet" cue, and not accidentally rewarding alert barking will take most families where they need to go. But the instinct is baked in, and some Pomapoos remain chatty dogs their whole lives.

Maltipoos bark, too. They just need more reason.

Which One for Kids?

Both do well. The Maltipoo edges it slightly for very young children, because its default is to absorb chaos rather than react to it.

The Pomapoo is excellent with children who are old enough to be calm — roughly five and up — and often bonds intensely with one child in particular.

For either breed, the risk with small kids is physical, not behavioral. A dropped ten-pound dog gets hurt.

Which One for Apartments?

Both fit the space. The question is the neighbors.

A Maltipoo in an apartment is usually a non-event. A Pomapoo may need deliberate barking work, especially in a building with a busy hallway.

Cost

Ours are $2,500 for either breed, which includes the full Puppy Starter Pack, crate and potty training already started, health checks, and free Midwest delivery.

Across the wider market both breeds generally run $1,500 to $4,000 depending on breeder, generation and location. Be cautious at the low end — prices well under market usually mean corners cut somewhere you will pay for later, in vet bills or temperament.

So Which Should You Get?

Choose a Pomapoo if you want a dog with real personality, you like a little sass, you would not mind a dog that announces visitors, and you have a household that is around enough to enjoy an engaged dog.

Choose a Maltipoo if you want the gentlest possible companion, quiet matters to you, you have very young children, or this is your first dog.

Either is fine if you mostly want a small, non-shedding, affectionate dog that fits in a lap. Honestly — most people are in this category, and at that point you should choose the individual puppy rather than the breed.

Is a Pomapoo or Maltipoo better for first-time owners?

The Maltipoo is generally the easier first dog. It is more forgiving of training mistakes, less vocal, and settles more readily. Pomapoos are very manageable too, but their alertness and barking benefit from an owner willing to do consistent early training.

Do Pomapoos or Maltipoos shed more?

At F1b, neither meaningfully sheds. In F1 crosses the Pomapoo is more likely to shed, because the Pomeranian parent has a double coat while the Maltese does not.

Which is smaller, a Pomapoo or a Maltipoo?

They overlap almost entirely, with both typically finishing between 7 and 15 pounds. The size of the Poodle parent matters far more than which cross you choose.

Do Pomapoos bark more than Maltipoos?
