Are Pomapoos Hypoallergenic? What Generation Actually Changes
If you have allergies and you have fallen for a Pomapoo, you have probably already read a dozen pages that say "yes, hypoallergenic!" and moved on. That answer is too simple, and if you buy on it you may end up rehoming a puppy.
Here is the honest version, from someone who has been breeding Doodles since 2010.
What Hypoallergenic Actually Means
Hypoallergenic means relatively unlikely to cause a reaction. It has never meant allergy-proof. There is no dog on earth that produces zero allergens.
What people react to is almost never the hair itself. It is dander — flakes of dead skin — plus proteins in saliva and urine that dry, go airborne, and settle on every surface in your house. Hair is just the delivery vehicle. A dog that drops a lot of coat is broadcasting dander around your home. A dog whose coat holds onto shed hair until you brush it out is containing the problem.
That is the whole mechanism, and it is why coat type decides the answer rather than breed name.
Why the Generation Decides It
A Pomapoo is a Pomeranian crossed with a Poodle. Those two parents have opposite coats.
Poodles have a dense, curly, hair-type single coat that grows continuously and sheds minimally. Pomeranians have a double coat — a soft undercoat under a coarse outer coat — and they blow that undercoat seasonally. Anyone who has lived with a Pomeranian knows the drifts of fluff.
So what you get depends on which side wins:

An F1 Pomapoo is a genuine coin flip. One puppy in the litter may have a Poodle coat and live happily with an allergic family. Its littermate may inherit enough Pomeranian undercoat to shed through the spring. Both are honestly sold as Pomapoos.
An F1b — a Pomapoo bred back to a Poodle — lands at roughly 75% Poodle. At that ratio the curly hair-type coat is dominant often enough that the outcome is dependable rather than lucky.

Are Pomapoos Hypoallergenic Enough for a Severe Allergy?
Sometimes, and you should test rather than hope.
Mild to moderate allergy sufferers do well with an F1b Pomapoo, especially with a grooming routine that keeps dander moving out of the coat instead of sitting in it. If someone in your home has asthma or reacts within minutes of entering a house with a dog, treat that as a different risk category.
Ask your breeder for a scent test before you commit. We will send a blanket the puppy has been sleeping on so the allergic person can spend a few days around the actual dog's dander, not a generalization about the breed. It costs us a blanket and it has saved several families from a heartbreaking return.
If a breeder will not do this, that tells you something.
How to Cut Allergens at Home
The coat gets you most of the way. Household habits get you the rest.
- Brush three or four times a week, outdoors if you can. An F1b holds its shed hair in the coat. Brushing is how it leaves — and doing it outside means it leaves the house too.
- Keep the dog out of the allergic person's bedroom. One dog-free room where someone sleeps eight hours a night does more than any other single change.
- Bathe every three to four weeks, not weekly. Over-bathing strips oils and causes dry skin, which makes more dander. This one is counterintuitive and gets a lot of people.
- Run a HEPA purifier where the dog spends its day, and wash bedding weekly in hot water.
- Wipe the coat down with a damp cloth after outdoor time to catch pollen the dog carries in — some "dog allergies" are seasonal allergies hitching a ride.
Do Pomapoos Shed?
Our F1b Pomapoos are non-shedding. You will find hair in the brush, not on your couch, and not in a seasonal blowout.
Be careful reading that claim elsewhere. A breeder selling F1 Pomapoos who says "non-shedding" about the whole litter is telling you something they cannot know yet. Coat outcome within an F1 litter is not uniform, and no one can promise it at eight weeks.
Pomapoo vs Maltipoo for Allergies
Both are excellent. If allergies are the deciding factor, the Maltipoo has a slight structural edge — the Maltese is also a hair-coated, non-shedding breed, so an F1 Maltipoo has no double-coated parent pulling against you. A Pomapoo has to overcome the Pomeranian side, which is exactly what the F1b cross does.
In practice, an F1b Pomapoo and an F1b Maltipoo land in the same place. Choose on temperament and size instead.
